Day 6 - Anyone for pool?

It's been a hectic 5 days (and seems so much longer) so today we decided to have a relaxing chilled one and hang around the Bellagio pool.

I say pool but there's actually probably about five of them of different shapes and sizes set amongst a lush green garden. The poshest bit is a roped off pool where the rich and famous and celebs hang - I kept having a nose but I didn't recognise anyone, just a bunch of wannabees! It surprises me that we always seem to be on the go even with our lives at home but I find it so easy to switch off and forget it all when I'm sitting in the sunshine! The temperature is hot but not overbearing at a lovely 30 degrees which keeps Oli and his freckly skin happy :)

We had a late lunch at the pool cafe, choosing the healthy option of a salad each. If only Oli hadn't had the whole jug of blue cheese dressing on his!

After a couple more hours round the pool and a quick dip, we figured it was time to get off our bums and go see some Vegas! In the evening we walked past four or five hotels (doesn't sound a lot but it took 25 minutes!) to get to the New York New York hotel. This hotel's structure boasts a replica New York skyline complete with a Statue of Liberty. If this wasn't enough what makes this hotel stand out even more is the giant loop-the-loop rollercoaster weaving its way around the outside of the buildings. We didn't manage to go on the ride last time we were here but this time around we made it a priority! It was 8.30pm and there was hardly a queue. As we took our seats on the carriage I wanted to change my mind - I'm two years older than the last time we were here but clearly not two years wiser! Before I knew it it was over and I wanted to ride it again, not at $14 per person though!

We walked along the strip for a bit, even found another geocache along the way (for those who don't know geocaching is a worldwide tresure hunt based on a gps system - more exciting than this sounds)! We made a quick visit to the MGM hotel as that's where we stayed last time, even popped into a shop where we bought our pink dice and green gambling chips for our UK wedding favours - they still have them in stock:-)

A couple of massive new hotels have been built on the strip since we were last here, very impressive considering The Shard at London Bridge seems to be taking forever - the Americans would have that baby built in six months! We returned to our hotel for dinner, Oli asked me what I fancied having and I said "noodles", we looked at the restaurants list in our hotel and there it was, a restaurant called "Noodles" - talk about faith!

2 days in this room and I only just discovered the curtains are automatic by a switch, Oli caught me tugging away at them manually - dumb blonde moment one, second moment was when I asked Oli to call the front desk as the lead on the hairdryer was way to short....they politely told us that the lead is extendable and pulls out from within the hairdryer itself - technology today eh!
My family are off on holiday today to Greece for two weeks, strange to know they are not at home and seem even further away....I guess I like the idea of them being at "home", makes me feel safe in some way. Not sure they will have internet access but if you're reading this big sis/mum/dad/Paul/Alfie and Daisy-Lou have a fab trip and I miss you all. Okay nostalgia over with!
We plan on popping to the fab pool again tomorrow and then in the evening making our way to Caesar's Palace for dinner and a looky looky around. I mean, when in Rome...
I only got a grade C in English so I have no idea if my blogs are coherent - I am prone to rambling! I can see by the blog stats that people all over the world (including Malaysia, India, Denmark and Germany!) have been reading our blog - I have no idea why, but you're very welcome! We're assuming that the followers in France are Oli's dad (hello John and Jules!), those in Norway are Marta/Marcus (hi guys!) and those in Canada are Oli's sister (hey Suzie!). Anyone, feel free to let me know if there's anything in particular you want me to blog about - questions/suggestions welcome!
Lulu's burger count so far, burgers 2, salads 3 - yesss!

Day 5 - Vegas baby "O"MG!!

Today was the start of our actual road trip, we left LA and drove 4 hours to the fabulous Las Vegas!  The four hours (covering the first 250 miles of the 10,000 we're planning to drive over the next 3 months...) took us through canyons, mountains and plains - we drove through sunshine, drizzle and a storm before finally reaching LV (no not Louis Vuitton)!

The "ghost town"
Oli the rootin' tootin' sherriff
The guide books are right, one minute we were driving through the desert road for miles and miles and then suddenly Vegas' amazing skyline pops up out of nowhere:-)  As most of you know Oli and I got married in Vegas two years ago this week so it was like visiting an old friend as we drove on to the famous glitzy strip.  By the time we arrived at the beautiful Bellagio hotel it was already 7pm, where the day went I have no idea....okay I do, in fact we stopped off at a retail outlet (yes big sis I bought you all clothes) and then Oli took us on a detour through a ghost town which prob took up a couple of hours)!

The hotel was breathtaking, my face was a picture so much so that the concierge asked "first time here?" - doh!  I have to stop looking like an out of space tourist!  We replied that we got married in Vegas two years ago this week, he gave us a friendly smile and said he upgraded our room to one overlooking the famous Bellagio fountains - wow that's two upgrades in two hotels...really must keep using the "we're celebrating our 2nd wedding anniversary" line for the next three months!!!

Our room is fab, another king size bed, this time with curtains, the bathroom complete with white robes and slippers has marble double sinks, a bath and a walk-in shower - how dirty can two people get in three days!!!  Not quite sure how I'm going to cope when we have to stay in the roadside motels and the winnebago for the rest of our three months now I'm getting accustomed to this luxury!!  And of course not forgetting the view!  We can see onto the strip and of course the fountains which perform their spectacular displays to music every 30 mins until midnight.  People line the streets below our 21st floor room to catch a glimpse, we did two years ago and now it's the view from our window:-)

Oli's colleague mentioned to him that we shouldn't get a room view of the fountains due to the noise - not true mister, the room is sound proof but if you put on channel 22 on your tv you hear the music which is being played below and can enjoy watching the show from the comfort of your own room!

After yet another quick shower and change of clothes ( a $12 dress I just bought, yes Oli I do need ANOTHER pink dress) we headed off to see if we could get tickets to the Cirque Du Soleil show "O" which is in one of the theatres inside our hotel (seriously every hotel here is sooooo much bigger than say Bluewater shopping centre or Westfield... Oli says it's 1.9 million square feet).  We were told that the show was sold out and that tomorrow (Monday) and Tuesday are their days off and we leave Vegas on Wednesday morning:-(  That doesn't deter team OliAnne, we headed to the theatre and queued up for returns, not only did we manage to get two tickets, we got the two seats that apprently the likes of Tom Cruise books and they are the preferred choice of the original creator of the show!

While waiting in the queue we got chatting (me? chat? never) to two American ladies here on memorial weekend vacation; they loved our accents (third time today) and we had a good laugh with them in the 40minute queuing time (even had a burger for dinner while in line) - they said it's the most fun they have had in Vegas while sober!!  Now the show, wow, "O" obviously stands for the "O" in OMG, I was lost for words if you can believe that?!  I don't think I can describe how utterly amazing it was....the show is mainly set in water, a pool IS the main stage but not an ordinary pool by any means.  The pool is like an amazing lake from a dream set in an enchanting forest, the water appears deep (Oli googled that it's 1.5 millon gallons) as acrobats/synchronised swimmers dived from the heights of the ceiling and then before you knew it other acts were running across it as somehow the floor below the pool had risen to floor level.  At times half the lake would be at floor level creating a stage and then parts would be a deep pool again - a truly amazing spectacle that I haven't given even an ounce of justice with my description.

Off to bed now as it's 1.30am local time 9.30am your time, we've got two full days in Vegas (not including our arrival today), first thing tomorrow we plan to ride a rollercoaster that goes all the way around the outside of the New York, New York hotel - yippee!

Enjoy your bank holiday Monday folks:-)

Day 4 - We're full of "Glee"

"Just a small town girl, living in a lonely world"...guess what we saw tonight - Glee the live tour!  It was fab need I say more???  Yes I shall but first lets start at the very beginning - I've heard it's a very good place to start!!

We had a bit of a well needed lie-in this morning as it has been all go, go, go in LA.  We left the hotel around 11am and headed to Venice Beach.  Now if you're like me all you know about VB (Venice Beach that is and not Victoria Beckham) is that it's famous for muscle beach and everyone being toned and fit.  Yes there were some of course, but it wasn't as vain as I thought it would be!

We parked at a fairly quiet part of the long white sandy beach.  The sea air smelled amazing so we took a stroll and found ourselves entering the "muscle beach" part of the area.  There was a gym outside with men with bigger muscles than Schwarzenegger lifting weights and bench pressing but the song "you're so vain" didn't even enter my brain as they seemed  to be genuinely working out rather than putting on a posing show.

The sidewalk (how American am I turning?!) part of the beach was packed with street performers, stalls, tacky shops, and cafes.  Tourist are bustling along enjoying the sights, and while some hire bikes or roller blades, the likes of us two buy a giant pizza slice and a hotdog and sit on the beach and watch the world go by for a bit:-)  There's nothing like good food.... this was nothing like good food but it was still yummy!  The atmosphere is really chilled and relaxed - part of me thinks that's to do with the constant smell of marijuana in the air, people are holding up signs selling it and the police nod to them as they stroll past - guess it's legal here...the waft certainly helped clear up my headache anyway!

The street performers were fab, a group in particular were amazing, 5 guys (not called Mo) did somersaults like I've never seen and I watch a lot of dancing programmes!  The finale to their act was to get 10 members of the crowd to stand in a line while one of the guys took a long run up somersaulting, backflipping and with one massive jump managed to somersault over all of them in one giant leap - my jaw practically hit the floor!  There were also some strange sights, like men in their pants working in shops/stalls, a man walking with bottles on his head (no idea why) and a near naked man holding snakes.  Ooh and I lost count of how many small cute dogs I saw, litterally everyone had one (well jel), my fave was a "dwarf" shitzu called Little Stinker:-)

After VB we drove to Santa Monica beach, it was too packed to even find a parking space (Memorial weekend) so we just had a drive around, took a few snaps then headed back to the hotel.  On the way we couldn't resist finding a geocache, our first in the US, it was located in a plant pot just inside the Jim Henson Production Studio - sadly the only muppet I saw was the sercurity guard...oh and the giant Kermit on the roof!

Another quick shower and change of clothes later we were in a cab on our way to downtown LA, we had a light dinner in The Marriott hotel bar, very swanky but friendly.  As we were finishing our dinner an American couple asked if they could sit on the spare chairs, we ended up chatting and they were a delightful couple (have to say that in case they are reading this - haha only joking Paddi and Jeff)!  They gave us some v good tips on places to visit all over the US, Paddi having visited every state!  We have swapped e mail addresses and are going to meet up for dinner when we are back in LA in a few months - a lovely case of serendipity meeting them tonight:-)

Oh yeah forgot to say why we were in Downtown LA, cos Oli managed to get us good seats for the Glee live tour:-)  For those of you who don't know, I'm a Glee fan, and if you are not I can only presume you have been living on another planet for the past three years!  We really enjoyed it, they sang live and their voices were amazing - I preferred it to the auto tuning we hear on the show.  They opened with Don't Stop Believing of course and finished with Queen's Somebody to Love, I videoed some bits throughout and will try and upload to fb soon.  Before we knew it it was over and the arena was filled with confetti - time to hang up my giant Glee foam finger for the night!  But what a fab ending to our time in sunny LA.

Tomorrow morning we are heading to Vegas - hope to be there by the early afternoon.  We have booked into the beautiful Bellagio hotel and are thinking of seeing the show "O" by Cirque Du Soleil.  We're planning on staying for three nights - they say it's the party capital of the world but we've had four fab hectic days in LA so we're hoping to chill instead of raving every night!

Catch you later!

Day 3 - Lights, Camera, Action!

Another day, another blog, it's only our third day but already it feels like we've been away from home for ages!

It was a fun packed day as we visited Universal Studios and I won't beat about the bush.....we saw the Desperate Housewives set and it was soooo surreal and I was just a little excited!

We got there about 9:30am this morning and raced straight to the Studio tour and it didn't let us down.

The courthouse from Back To The Future

We boarded a little tram train which took us on an hour long tour around it's working studios and film sets.  One minute we were in the wild west and then we'd turn a corner and be in 1940's New York.  We saw loads of sets/props such as the courthouse from Back to the Future (minus the famous clock!), a massive plane crash set from War of the Worlds and have I mentioned the Desperate Housewives set!!

Wisteria Lane
The train also took us through a couple of fun mini show demonstrations including an underground subway station that got flooded.  That tour was defo the highlight of the park for us but not to say we didn't enjoy the rest of the attractions such as the Jurassic park ride, the Mummy ride and shows such as Waterworld, Terminator and Shrek 4D were great fun:-)  I don't feel guilty for eating the giant pretzel and ice-cream as we must have walked miles...well at least three anyway!!

Lulu and new best mate Charlie
It's now midnight local time/8am for you and we've just come home from dinner.  When we got back from Universal we had a quick jacuzzi and change of clothes then out we went.  It was our two year wedding anniversary today and Oli booked a fab restaurant called Miceli's, it's just off Hollywood Boulevard and was the first Italian resturaunt to open in Hollywood, in 1949.  Pics of classic famous Hollywood stars don the walls of this cosy charming place.  The maitre d' (Charlie I liked to call him... cos that's his name) was the cutest little old man, he looked about 85 and his wig looked even older!  When I asked in my politest English if we could take some pics of the place he was delighted and told stories of how Marilyn Monroe and Judy Garland used to have dinner there!

The food was delicious if not too big a portion (my pasta could have fed an Italian family of 8 and Oli only managed half the pizza - yes people that was a shock to me as well)!  Perhaps in hindsight we shouldn't have eaten the complementary bread rolls but they were served warm and it would have been rude not to!  My mate Charlie was delighted to know we are travelling for three months and I promised we would visit again on our return to LA - see ya in 3 months Charlie!

Four people today said they loved our accents, one teenager copied it in a Dick Van Dyke way, and I was prodded slightly too hard by an old woman in Miceli's who said I looked adorable in my onesie - good day all round!

Last day in LA tomorrow/by the time you read this (until we come back to fly home), we're gonna play it by ear but prob gonna head towards the beaches and fingers crossed we can get tickets for Glee!!!

Ciao for now....that is if anyone is reading this!!!

Day 2 - Hooray for Hollywood!

OMG what a day it's been, celeb spotting, glitz and glamour and tours galore!  So let me start with this morning.  Woke up at 6:30am bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, slept through from 10pm local time last night and fingers crossed the jetlag is now sorted!  The hotel provides breakfast so it would have been rude not to sample it on our first morning, bagels apently with good old Philadephia and a cup of tea - you can take the girl out of England but you can't take England out of the girl :-)  Something that made us giggle at breakfast like naughty schoolchildren were the tiny disposable cups of milk that were called "mini moo's" - do the Americans know that's what I call a woman's lady parts?!?!?!

Our hotel is situated 2 mins from the famous Chinese Theatre where the handprints are in the ground, within a second we were playing tourists and I was kneeing on the floor with my hands in Judy Garlands prints - for a moment there I felt closer to her!!!  The Hollywood Walk of Fame is a site to see indeed, bustling with people by lunchtime - luckily we were there at 9am so had the luxury of fewer people around.

We signed up to two bus tours, the first was in a v small open-topped people carrier, our tour guide was called George and I think he was bi-curious!  He was a charming and funny guide who I like to think was so because of his nature and not because he wanted bigger tips!  The tour was fab and consisted of the Hollywood celeb homes such as Tom Cruise, Posh & Becks, Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox and MJ's last residence - RIP!!

The Beckham's house
As well as stopping at classic star's homes such as Sinatra and Gene Kelly's pads, the guide was up to date with his reality stars - I let out out an over excited "whoop!" when we stopped outside Lauren Conrad and Audrina Partridge's home they shared during The Hills:-)  We did actually spot one celeb - Sandra Bullock was out jogging, the bus went quiet in shock and motormouth here shouted "I love you Sandy"!  In amongst the celeb houses we took a drive through Beverly Hills, seeing famous restaurants and clubs and cruising along Rodeo Drive, baby!  The tour completed with a stop up on the Hollywood Hills with a photo op to take snaps of the famous Hollywood sign.

Spot the Hollywood sign!

The second tour was on a small traditional trolley (a tram on wheels) exploring the history of Hollywood.  The tour guide John was super excited when he found out we were from England and at once put on a Liverpudlian accent and took on the persona of John Lennon, he practically wet himself when I told him I had George Harrison's autograph!  John was the 7th person to ask us if we saw the Royal Wedding - it's usually the first thing people have asked us once they find out we're from London.  The highlight of that tour for us was going in the Hollywood Bowl (no not bowling at Surrey Quays), the famous amphitheatre where major artists have performed - John was delighted to tell us the Beatles played there twice:-)

We had dinner at a lovely place called Bossa Nova on Sunset Boulevard, where I can confirm I had my first Brazilian!  It was a combination of chicken and rice, the description of the sauce sold it to me - "our own recipe, with spices and a PINK sauce" - it was delicious!

It's now 10:30pm local time (6:30am for you guys) so we're off to get some beauty sleep - another early start as we're off to Universal Studios during the day and Oli has booked us a restaurant in the evening (keeping it secret from me) for our second wedding anniversay - eek I'm excited :-)

Wish you were here!

Day 1 - LAX - Zzzzzzz!

So the 11 hour flight to LA wasn't as bad as I was thinking, good old Virgin Atlantic with their individual TV screens on the backs of the seats with tonnes of films to watch on demand - almost conviced myself I was at Surrey Quays cinema!!  9 hours passed swiftly then with two hours to go a blood vessel burst unexpectedly in my nose and caused the poor air hostess 30 minutes of panic until the flow stopped!  It was gruesome people so I'll stop there but be assured my brand new white tracky bottoms didn't get a splash but my poor tshirt is prob stained for life!!

Been up now for 22 hours and it's only 8:20pm local time but 4:20am in England, making myself stay awake another couple of hours with the final of American Idol to keep us company and then hopefully beat off the jetlag!!

We picked up our hire car, I say car but it is one mother of a beast!!!  Oli chose the size and I chose the colour....sadly they didn't have pink but I went for the closest and got the shiney red one :-)  By the time we picked up the beast and found our way through LA rush hour traffic we got to the hotel at around 7pm, with a pleasant surprise that our room has been upgraded and we found ourselves with a jacuzzi next to the bedroom - it's almost as big as the beast!!!  We had a famous "In-and-Out" burger for dinner, it's basically a fast food joint but all the burgers are cooked individually like Ed's Diner - yummy!!  Glimpsed the Hollywood sign on the way to the hotel but we're looking forward to a full-on touristy day tomorrow of all the sights - we'll keep you posted!  :-)
