Not a hugely eventful day today but nice to plod along knowing we are making some tracks, taking us through 3 states, Mississippi, Alabama and into Florida. We missed breakfast yet again so we could crack on but stop practically immediately at a huge outlet to buy family discounted clothes from their lists – that’s now two outlets we’ve shopped in and neither Oli nor I have bought anything for ourselves – what restraint I have!
Seaside's tiny post office! |
We had lunch there, yummy giant pizza slice, then hit the road. Barring one stop at a gas station a couple of hours down the road and a drive through Starbucks (need to keep Oli filled with caffeine) we didn’t stop until we reached the idyllic town of Seaside. Seaside is the ultimate wholesome American town, houses are either on the beach or have white picket fences and perfect little mowed lawns. Families were riding bicycles and couples riding tandems, people were strolling along hand in hand eating ice-creams – it was like something out of a film.
Truman's house! |
Funnily enough we learned that this picturesque town with its perfect blue skies was in fact the main setting for the film “The Truman Show” – remember the scene where Truman leaves his house waving and saying “good morning” to the neighbours??
Natchez Street |
Well we found the exact street on which it was set, finding the street was easy but finding the exact house was not. Oli found details on his trusty iphone of the street name and door number, 31 Natchez Street – fab how hard could this be to spot, plus we had a picture of the house!
The house numbers didn’t go in order, in any order it would appear, 30 minutes later when we were about to give up we noticed a car parked conveniently in front of its gate with the door number 36 above the front door. On closer inspection the gate had number 31 on it and said "Truman" – well waddya know! Didn't know a person could be starstruck by a house but Oli certainly was! :)
It did occur to me that surely no one in this down could ever be sad or depressed as this place is simply cute, happy and sunny and I fully imagine everyone knows everyone here – just like Bermondsey but with none of the yobs, petty crime, council estates - and then on steroids!!!
We left Seaside around 8pm, stopped off for dinner along the way and after 3 failed stop offs at hotels to check availability we finally found a “Sleep Inn” to rest our weary heads for the night. We are only about 4 hours into Florida - although we are planning on staying in the state for about 15 days there are tonnes of things/places we want to see and do including taking a trip on a fan boat on the Everglades, stopping off in Miami and also going over to the Keys. Looking forward to seeing what the “Sunshine” state has in store for us?!
